Learn About the Screening Test Technician (STT) Hands-On Proficiency Training
DOT regulations require Screening Test Technicians (STTs) to complete device-specific proficiency training before conducting Department of Transportation alcohol screening tests using an Alcohol Screening Device (ASD). Training must include both procedural knowledge and demonstrated hands-on competency using the specific device the technician will operate.
Students must first complete the required online DOT STT procedures training course covering 49 CFR Part 40 alcohol testing procedures, documentation requirements, and testing protocols. After completing the online course, students advance to live hands-on proficiency training for their specific ASD device. The full training process (both components) should be completed within a period of 30 days or less.
Certifications are valid for 5 years, at which time the full training must be completed again.
During proficiency training, students perform a series of supervised mock alcohol screening tests in real time under the direct observation of a qualified instructor. DOT regulations require successful completion of error-free mock tests demonstrating proper device operation, testing procedures, and accurate completion of the Alcohol Testing Form (ATF).
Hands-on STT proficiency training is conducted remotely by webcam, allowing students to complete the required live practical instruction from their location while receiving direct instructor observation and feedback.
Training includes:
-
DOT STT procedural requirements under 49 CFR Part 40
-
Device-specific instruction for your approved ASD
-
Proper alcohol screening procedures
-
Completion of DOT Alcohol Testing Forms
-
Live supervised mock testing exercises (separate fee required)
-
Error correction and procedural coaching as needed
Separate fees apply for each training component:
-
Online DOT STT procedures training
-
Live hands-on ASD proficiency training
Only individuals who successfully complete both the required procedures training and hands-on proficiency requirements are fully qualified to perform DOT alcohol screening tests as a Screening Test Technician.

Webcam Training Information
Webcam proficiency training for DOT Screening Test Technicians (STTs) requires students to complete the online STT procedures course within 30 days prior to the live hands-on session. Training is conducted live with a qualified instructor using Zoom and includes supervised mock alcohol screening tests on the student’s specific DOT-approved Alcohol Screening Device (ASD).
Students must have a reliable high-speed internet connection, a computer or laptop with a quality webcam and microphone, speakers, and access to Zoom. Tablets, iPads, and cellular phones are not acceptable for training. Students should test their internet connection, webcam, and Zoom functionality prior to the scheduled session and ensure company firewalls or security settings will not block access.
Students are responsible for having all required training materials and supplies available before class, including DOT Alcohol Testing Forms (ATFs), ASD devices, control logs, quality control solution, gloves, pens, and other device-specific supplies. Certain devices may also require mouthpieces, gas tanks, regulators, or additional accessories.
Training sessions are scheduled in Eastern Time and students must be fully prepared, on time, and available for the entire session without interruptions. Hands-on webcam training generally takes approximately 3 hours, depending on the device and class size. If only one student is attending, another person must be available to act as the donor/subject during mock testing exercises.
Students must have immediate access to printing, scanning/emailing, telephone communication, and all required paperwork during the session. Exams and evaluations are completed under live instructor supervision. Failure to meet technical, equipment, or supply requirements at the scheduled training time may require rescheduling and repayment of training fees.
